A new trailer has dropped for The Serpent’s Skin - and it promises demons, desire, and unapologetically queer chaos.
The latest feature from Australian filmmaker Alice Maio Mackay continues her rapid rise as one of indie horror’s most distinctive voices. At just 21 years old, Mackay has already directed six features, including cult favorite Satranic Panic.
A Supernatural Romance With Bite
Described as a “supernatural queer romance thriller” in the spirit of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Charmed, and the early films of Gregg Araki, The Serpent’s Skin blends punk aesthetics with emotional intensity.
Written by Mackay and frequent collaborator Benjamin Pahl Robinson, the film follows Anna, a twentysomething who escapes her small, transphobic hometown to build a new life in the city alongside her sister.
There, she reconnects with Gen - a mysterious and confident young woman she first encountered in visions. Anna soon discovers that Gen possesses supernatural abilities… powers Anna herself shares. But their growing magical and romantic bond is thrown into chaos when a demon is inadvertently unleashed, targeting everyone close to them.
The film stars Jordan Dulieu, Alexandra McVicker, and Avalon Fast. Executive producer duties were handled by Louise Weard.
Theatrical Release and Special Screenings
The Serpent’s Skin will open in New York on March 27 at the Alamo Drafthouse Downtown Brooklyn, followed by a Los Angeles debut on April 3 at the Alamo Drafthouse DTLA as part of a special Fantastic Fest Presents showcase. Mackay and special guests are expected to attend opening night screenings.
Additional Q&A screenings are scheduled for April 2 at the Roxie Theater and April 4 at Vidiots, with more cities to be announced.
