Supernatural Queer Horror 'No Salgas; Brings Repression and Fear to the Dominican Republic

No Salgas Stay Quiet

A dark, supernatural threat collides with repression and desire in No Salgas (Stay Quiet), an upcoming coming-of-age horror film set in the Dominican Republic.

Variety has revealed a first-look image from the film and reports that ArtHood Entertainment has secured worldwide sales rights.

The story follows Liz, a medical student struggling to come to terms with her sexuality in a deeply conservative society. As she navigates grief and hidden longing, an unexplained force begins to turn the people around her into threats.

The film opens with a violent incident involving two teenagers fleeing into the night, ending with one of them being killed by her own possessed mother. Later, Liz’s secret feelings for her friend Wendy are cut short when Wendy is murdered by her brother.

A year on, Liz and a group of friends reunite for a memorial trip, only to find that whatever was unleashed that night is still present - and growing more dangerous. As paranoia and violence spread, Liz manages to escape, realising the evil has not been fully defeated.

The cast includes Camila Issa, Cecile van Welie and Camila Santana.

No Salgas marks the feature directorial debut of Victoria Linares, who says the film examines how power and social norms are shaped by heteronormativity.
The Dominican Republic is highly conservative. That environment exposes how the idea of being an ‘ally’ can often be more about performance than real support. In the film, tolerance exists without understanding, and that ignorance can still help sustain oppressive conditions.
No release date as of yet has been announced.
