Hayley Kiyoko’s Girls Like Girls Movie Is Finally Here - First Poster Revealed

Girls Like Girls

Hayley Kiyoko’s Girls Like Girls is officially heading to cinemas, and the first poster gives a clear sense of what’s coming - a warm, sunlit queer coming-of-age romance built around first love and self-discovery.

The film marks Kiyoko’s feature directorial debut and is inspired by her 2015 song and music video of the same name, which became a defining moment in online queer culture. The original video, starring Stefanie Scott and Kelsey Asbille, followed two teenage girls navigating friendship, attraction, and fear, and went on to rack up more than 160 million views on YouTube.

That story has continued to grow over the years, and after being adapted into a bestselling novel in 2023, Girls Like Girls is now making the leap to the big screen as a full-length feature.

The film stars Maya da Costa and Myra Molloy, with Levon Hawke and Zach Braff in supporting roles. It centres on Coley, a teenager who moves to a new town and experiences her first serious romance over the course of one transformative summer. As the relationship unfolds, Coley is forced to confront questions about identity, belonging, and what it means to be honest with herself.

Kiyoko developed the story with filmmaker Chloe Okuno, and co-wrote the screenplay with Stefanie Scott, who starred in the original music video. The project is produced by Marc Platt, Adam Siegel, Michael Philip, Jason Moring, Richard Alan Reid, Katie McNicol, and Dee Best.

The film will also feature new music from Kiyoko, continuing the close connection between the story and the artist’s work.

Focus Features is set to release Girls Like Girls in cinemas nationwide on June 19.

What began as a three-minute music video that quietly helped young people see themselves on screen has grown into a feature film about first love, vulnerability, and finding confidence in who you are.
