Pixar’s ‘Elio’ Reportedly Removed Queer Storylines During Turbulent Production

Elio

Pixar has long been celebrated for its groundbreaking storytelling and original animated films, but in recent years, the studio has struggled to replicate the creative and commercial success that once defined its brand.

Once known for bold new ideas, Pixar has increasingly leaned on sequels and existing franchises. Many observers point to Coco as the last original Pixar release to achieve widespread critical and commercial acclaim.

Now, the troubled production behind Elio is drawing attention after reports revealed that queer themes were removed during development.

Original Vision for ‘Elio’ Included Queer Elements

Originally directed by Adrian Molina - who previously co-directed Coco - Elio was conceived as a colorful sci-fi adventure centered on a young boy who finds himself interacting with alien civilizations.

According to people familiar with the early version of the project, Molina intended the film’s lead character to reflect aspects of his own experience as an openly gay man.

That reportedly included subtle moments suggesting the character’s queer identity. Among the elements later removed were a pink bicycle associated with the character and a scene in which Elio imagines raising a child with a male crush.

However, Pixar leadership reportedly became concerned that such themes might force conversations some parents would feel unprepared to have with their children.

Pixar Leadership’s Approach to Family Storytelling

In a recent profile in The Wall Street Journal, Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter discussed the studio’s philosophy when it comes to family audiences.

Docter, who directed major Pixar hits like Up, Monsters, Inc., and Inside Out, suggested the studio tries to ensure its films appeal broadly to families.

He reportedly remarked that Pixar is focused on making movies rather than “hundreds of millions of dollars of therapy,” referencing decisions to remove certain story elements from Elio and other projects.

Production Turmoil and Creative Changes

Back in 2023, Molina presented an early cut of Elio to Pixar leadership. According to sources, the discussions that followed were difficult, and Molina ultimately departed the project.

Directors Madeline Sharafian and Domee Shi later stepped in to rework the film.

The project reportedly underwent multiple revisions, with some staff members leaving during production. Former Pixar assistant editor Sarah Ligatich later said the changes reflected how unhappy many people involved in the film had become.

According to others close to the project, moments hinting at the character’s sexuality were gradually removed during the rewriting process.

Box Office Disappointment

When Elio finally reached theaters, the results were disappointing.

The film opened to approximately $20.8 million in the United States and $14 million internationally, marking one of the weakest opening weekends in Pixar’s history.

For some critics and industry observers, the film’s difficult production and numerous revisions may have contributed to a final version that felt disconnected from its original concept.

Pixar Faces an Uncertain Future

The struggles surrounding Elio come as Pixar continues to face broader challenges in the changing film industry.

Streaming platforms and shifting audience expectations have placed new pressure on studios that once dominated the theatrical animation market.

Docter has said his role as chief creative officer is to ensure Pixar films appeal to the widest possible audience.

Whether that approach can help the studio regain the creative momentum that once made it one of Hollywood’s most admired animation companies remains an open question.
